Self Storage vs Hiring a Shipping Container

At various points in life, we can find ourselves in need of a bit of extra space, whether it’s due to relocation, decluttering, renovations or another reason.  Self storage is quite often the first option that springs to mind.  Moving our belongings to another location gets them out of the way easily, out of sight out of mind.  Another option is to buy or hire a shipping container to keep at home/on the business premises, but which is the best choice? You can of course opt for a standard self-storage facility, but have you ever considered buying or hiring a shipping container to assist you in the safe storage of valuable items? Here are a few starting points to think about…

Self Storage

  • Self storage facilities are available all over the country and many are flexible in terms of what kind and what capacity of space they provide.
  • Self storage facilities get your items out of the way and you can get access to them relatively easily, within the owner’s discretion/opening times.
  • Security at these units can be good, but this should be checked first; for example at Universal Containers, we have 24 hour CCTV and floodlights in our fenced off self storage area, and all our units are secured with galvanised steel locking handles.

Shipping Containers

  • Buying or hiring a shipping container can be a cost effective solution as it generally works out cheaper than using self storage and they retain a good resale value.   If you need the storage long term then buying a shipping container is a no brainer, but even hiring is usually a cheaper option as well.
  • The downside in “adopting a shipping container” is space.  Not only do you need to have enough space to pitch the container, but also enough to allow for delivery.  This can be an issue for some in the UK, for more information, get in touch.
  • When it comes to security, shipping containers are usually very secure, being made of steel, but external security measures such as CCTV are left up to you.
  • Access to your own shipping container is easy as you can put it anywhere you like, so travel can be kept to a minimum and you don’t need to pay extra costs such as van hire for transporting items backwards and forwards.

Cleared things up a bit? Of course, self storage is the go to option for some people but in most cases, it’s only to go to option because they’ve never really considered buying or hiring a shipping container for storage purposes. Storage – for whatever purpose – is a necessity for a lot of people, and with valuable items in question, it is absolutely imperative that your storage solution provides the impeccable security needed to give you the peace of mind you deserve.

At Universal Containers, we provide both shipping container purchase/hire and self storage. We hire and sell containers at competitive rates and if you are on a tight budget, we have used containers on offer.  Our self storage facility is second to none and has a fantastic reputation.  If you want advice on which opton is best for you call our team today on 0845 0500 330

New Developments at Universal Containers

With over 20 years experience in the shipping container industry, we are excited at the new trend of using shipping containers for more than large storage and transportation.  Our favourite metal boxes are ticking all the right boxes in current architectural trends and speed and efficiency in construction.  Conversions are becoming more and more popular around the world with examples ranging from housing and retail units to swimming pools and cinemas.

We have been converting shipping containers for quite some time, but due to the increasing popularity of conversions both in the UK and abroad, we are now expanding our facilities to include a brand new, state of the art workshop facility.

“The new workshop is designed for the development of prototype conversions”

We are ever keen to remain the market leaders in container conversions.  Paul McAuliffe, Operations General Manager comments: “The expansion of the workshop facility from six buildings to eight will allow us to expand into new markets.  This is especially exciting with the forthcoming prototype of the hydraulic multi use retail units we are producing.”

We have an overwhelming response and interest in recent concepts created by our team and we are eager to see these become a reality via research and development and ultimately production.  Paul further comments:

“The additional work space will allow us to meet our customer deadlines and expectations in the future”

Senior Project Design Engineer, Carl Jeffries is also looking forward to the upcoming expansion; “Our latest expansion will enable Universal to exceed customers’ expectations both in lead time & quality. The additional space will also provide an area for development of prototype units for new, emerging markets.”

Whereas at Universal Containers, we pride ourselves on delivering high quality container conversions to the specification of our customer time and time again.

“We want to continue to be innovative in this evolving marketplace which is becoming more and more on trend”

So, what can you expect from Universal Containers once we have our new facility in place?  Well, you’ll just have to watch this space, but rest assured we have very exciting ideas in store for these large metal boxes!

Staff Spotlight: George Woolley

Introducing Universal Containers’ Managing Director, George Woolley…

When did you start Universal Containers and how did the business start out?

Business was established back in the mid-70s which I took full control in  2003 after working as a container repairer/depot manager since 1983.

Have you always been in the Shipping Containers industry?

I spent 2 x years as an apprentice Butcher with the Co-op Foods the rest within the container industry.

Where does your passion for the industry come from?

My Passion evolves back from my early days as an apprentice, as I was inspired and mind filled with how a metal box can be transformed into all types of everyday usages.

What has been your most memorable moment at Universal Containers?

My most memorable point being with USC Ltd was when the company  purchased the 6 acre site where we currently sitting on  back in May 2015 ( no more landlords and rent to pay!)

Where do you see the business in 5 years time?

I can see the business doubling in size as there is a huge potential for container conversions which amazes me every time I see a new concept that has just been created.

What do you think has led to Universal Containers success?

Our success is based on selling good quality products by our loyal experienced staff along with our excellent customer services from start to finish of every completed order no matter on how big or small that maybe.

What has been the funniest thing to happen to anyone while at Universal Containers?

One of the funniest things would have been our works Christmas party back in the 90s.  We had laid out on each table fake lottery tickets along with all the Christmas silverware and cutlery. When the interval was announced everybody was asked to scratch their lottery tickets. One particular member of staff, Mr Kenneth Reid  ( Stacker Driver )  was set up with this gag, jumped up with joy, hands raised in the air, got up on the dance floor with some of his family members thinking he had won 20k (I wish!)
